About Multi-schools

Promoting the integration of migrant children in multi-cultural schools through comprehensive digital-driven language learning and family civic engagement

The idea of the MULTI-SCHOOLS project was born with the vision to reduce barriers faced by migrant students by adopting a whole-school approach that will equip teachers with skills and resources to teach in multicultural classrooms, involve parents in the educational progress and support the children throughout their education.

The project aims to support schools in creating an inclusive environment for migrant students by strengthening teachers’ competencies, encouraging parents’ involvement in their children’s school life, and strengthening their language competencies to better communicate and support their children’s learning achievements. It also emphasizes the promotion of EU values such as respect, acceptance, diversity, equality, solidarity, accessibility, and inclusiveness among natives and migrants.

Background

Why is MULTISCHOOLS project important?

The issue of migration has been particularly urgent since 2015, when enormous numbers of asylum seekers arrived in the EU through sea routes. As stated in the 2021-2027 Action Plan, more than 34 million foreigners are currently living in the EU (around 8% of the EU population). The refugee crisis was further expanded by the massive inflows of Ukrainian refugees to the EU due to Russia’s invasion in February 2022. According to data obtained by UNHCR (15th November 2022), 7,841,359 refugees from Ukraine have been recorded across Europe. Germany, Italy, and Spain are among the top five countries hosting Ukrainian refugees. Millions are in need of protection, support as well as integration and inclusion.

Although, remarkable efforts have been made by the EC and nationally by MS, the 2021-2027 Action Plan Integration and Inclusion notes that ‘persisting challenges in relation to employment, education, access to basic services and to the social inclusion of migrants demonstrate that additional action is needed. Education is an area of great importance for the integration and inclusion of young children, as well as their families in the local community.”

Project

MULTI-SCHOOLS

The project is aiming to support the integration and inclusion of migrant students in the school community, in a holistic way through the active involvement of their parents. Barriers, challenges and needs of migrant families are addressed through various innovative digital-driven pedagogies that will empower them with key competences (language, social and civic) in order to enable their engagement in the school life, with a systemic effect on their access and participation in the community and labour market.
